Read DL

17th February 2026
We are taking part in the Read DL initiative here at Tiernasligo National School. This year's book is 'The Boy With Big Decisions' by Helen Rutter. This book focuses on the decisions we make in our lives and taking control of our own decisions. It is a very accessible read. Some students couldn't put it down and have already finished it! We look forward to lots of activities based around this book in the coming weeks at school.
Update: 26th March 2026
It was an honour to be one of a small number of schools invited to the wonderful celebration of reading today in Letterkenny for the closing ceremony of the Read DL initiative, celebrating its 15th year!
This programme offers 2,000 books annually for Primary and Secondary school at a highly subsidised rate to encourage accessibility and engagement in reading.
Read DL is a county-wide reading movement, designed to bring the people of Donegal together by collectively reading the same book. This year's book was 'The Boy with Big Decisions' by Helen Rutter.
The aims of the Read DL project are to:
π Improve literacy skills and foster a love of reading;
π Entice people, young and old, to read more and;
π Encourage the entire community to read the same book, share ideas and to broaden and expand their viewpoints
This was Tiernasligo NationalSchool first year participating with thanks to a recommendation from Grainne, our creative writing tutor, at The WRITE STUFF Kids Club.
We were thrilled to take part in the occasion. Many thanks to the Ombudsman for Children for joining us on the day. Fantastic participation from our students speaking about this year's book. A proud representation of our small school making a big impact. Well done! π
